Cuboids on a Line

A Study in Minimalist Sequentiality

"Cuboids on a Line" is a striking private residence that interprets architectural minimalism with a bold linear arrangement. Conceived as a series of pristine white volumes, the design unfolds across an 100-meter-long stone drywall that anchors the residence to its landscape. Each cuboid sits in sequential alignment, creating a rhythmic interplay of solid and void, where enclosed living spaces alternate with open-air patios.

Facing north, the main facade of the residence is intentionally restrained, with only minimal openings to the north. Instead, expansive glass walls open toward the east and west, maximizing sunlight while minimizing exposure to colder northern winds. This design choice, combined with strategically placed patios, creates an intriguing spatial experience. Views are offered sparingly from the interior, providing only glimpses of the surrounding landscape and subtly urging residents to step outside, where the full panorama unfolds.

To further enhance the interplay of light and shadow, skylights have been thoughtfully integrated throughout, allowing natural light to filter down from above and illuminate the interiors with a soft, ambient glow. The continuous stone wall acts as both a physical foundation and a grounding visual axis, guiding the eye along the residence’s length and enhancing its horizon-like silhouette.

Drawing on the design lineage of various modernist residences built on the island, "Cuboids on a Line" carries forward this architectural tradition, capturing the essence of modernist art through its pure geometric forms, carefully choreographed sightlines, and luminous interiors. The residence offers a living experience that is both sheltered and expansive, a harmonious blend of linear order, open space, and contextual sensitivity. The design encourages a deep connection with the landscape, blurring the boundaries between indoors and out, and creating a serene and immersive experience for its residents.

The houses are divided into smaller volumes, to better adjust to the scale of vernacular farmhouses. The patios created between the corresponding volumes house different activities throughout the day.
