Katikiá
The plot is located close to the borders of the settlement of Marpissa, Paros. On its proximity, there are only rural houses, that were used to host people that lived on the countryside and were primarily involved in agricultural activities. Those were called katikies (κατοικιές). Due to the agricultural activities, there are also a lot of circular thresing floors, called alonia (gr:/αλώνια), as well as pigeon houses (περιστεριώνες).
Those manmade elements, acted as the main references for the proposed building. The thin tall volumes of the pigeon houses, and the paved floors of alonia, scattered on the landscape informed the design proposal. The two-storey volume is located in the center of the composition, and hosts a multipurpose room that acts as the place for the dinning area on the ground floor, and an independent guest house on the first floor.
Around that central space, volumes spin and rotate and by being connected a the corners, two small patios are created in between, that bring light and green space at the very heart of the house. The break of the building program into smaller units, brings the scale of the building closer to the proportions of the vernacular houses found in the area, allowing it to become fully integrated with its surroundings.
