~ Xerolithies ~
Aim of the proposal has been the coupling of the building with the topography of the plot. The element of xerolithia, as a symbol of man made environment, that respects the natural topography, but at the same time creates plateaus for living or agricultural purposes. For that reason, a system of walls that move along the contour lines, embracing carefully placed backyards and opening the outdoor sheltered spaces towards the view is introduced. Between the parallel stone walls, the building program is placed, alternating between closed and open space, solid and void.
The composition is in dialogue with the xerolithies of the opposite hill. The turning of the walls, has a twofold purpose. On the one hand orients the building mass towards the view of Portes and the sea. At the same time, it breaks the linearity of a long wall creating an interesting play between closed and outdoor space.
The entrance to the main house occurs through the street above the plot, entering from the backyard, and having the minimum impact on the existing olive grove, and its relation to the spectacular terraces of the rocky hill across the plot.
The houses are divided into smaller volumes, to better adjust to the scale of vernacular farmhouses. The patios created between the corresponding volumes house different activities throughout the day.
