M_House
M_House is a private residence, designed for a family of five, at a plot in the center of Marpissa, a village at the east side of Paros.
The residence is situated at the northern side of the plot, in a similar fashion to most houses of the area, trying to make the most out of the southern sun. Bringing natural light on a very narrow plot, while at the same time creating a shaded yard, helped the building become less dependent on artificial cooling mechanisms. The southern orientation coincides with the view towards the sea, that its residents will enjoy partially from the first floor, and at its full glory from the open roof terrace.
The most characteristic morphological features one comes across at the village of Marpissa, are the arches that form a passage in the narrow streets, often situated under a building's mass. The very same notion is used on our M_House project, where the private spaces of the first floor, form an L shape that is supported by an arch, which shapes the passage to the back yard.
Our goal was to create an open-plan ground floor that would include all common areas and would refer to the patio formed by the building and its surroundings. The open-plan makes the most out of a tiny plot and allows more people to occupy the common areas at the same time. Utility areas, such as a guest WC and a small pantry are hidden behind the kitchen cabinets, while the open staircase that leads to the first floor ensure that the space has the least visual obstructions. The first floor consists of 3 bedrooms for the children along with the master bedroom and their bathrooms. A corridor leads to the terrace of the first floor, where another exterior staircase takes visitors to the top of the house, and at a large open sitting area that enjoys unobstructed views to the sea and surrounding landscape.
